General procedure for the synthesis of 4-methoxy-3,5-dimethyl-2-hydroxymethylpyridine from 2-chloromethyl-3,5-dimethyl-4-methoxypyridine hydrochloride: 80 g of 2-chloromethyl-4-methoxy-3,5-dimethylpyridine hydrochloride was taken and 300 ml of methanol and 150 ml of water were added followed by 5.4 g of potassium iodide and 40.4 g of sodium hydroxide. The mixture was stirred and heated to reflux and the reaction lasted for 4 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the methanol was removed by rotary evaporator. To the residue, 300 ml of drinking water was added, followed by extraction with dichloromethane (150 ml each time, 3 times). The organic phases were combined, washed with saturated sodium chloride solution and dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate. Finally, the organic phase was concentrated to give 50.0 g of a red oily liquid in 83.0% yield. | [References]
