3.1 II-3-1:
II-3-1: Synthesis of 2-cyano-4-methylpyridine A mixture of 10.9 g (0.1 mol) of 4-methylpyridine N-oxide and 12.6 g (0.1 mol) of dimethylsulfuric acid was stirred under heating at 70° to 75° C., and then, a solution of 12.6 g (0.2 mol) of potassium cyanide dissolved in 40 ml of water at 10° C. or lower was dropwise added while stirring. After stirring at the same temperature for one hour, and further, at room temperature for one hour, 150 ml of water was added and the mixture extracted with dichloromethane. After drying over anhydrous sodium sulfate, the extract was concentrated and separated by silica gel column chromatography (with ethyl acetate:hexane=2:8 to 3:7 for the first time, 2:8 for the second time), followed by recrystallization from hexane to give 0.80 g of a colorless solid (yield 6.78%). m.p 84.5°-85.5° C. IR (KBr): 2240 1595 cm^-1.
