Steps:

1.4.2. 5,7-Dimethyl[1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine (3b).

A solution of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (2.94 g, 35 mmol) and 1,3-pentanedione (3.5 g, 35 mmol) in HOAc (10mL) was refluxed for 3 h. The resulting mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure to give pure compound 3b (5.18 g, 100 %). White solid; mp 130-132 °C. νmax (KBr) 1547, 1639,1780, 1860, 2923, 3044, 3013, 3419 (br.)cm-1; δH (200 MHz, DMSO-d6) 8.52(1H, s, C(2)H), 7.13 (1H, s, C(6)H), 2.69 (3H, s, CH3), 2.54 (3H, s, CH3); δC (125 MHz, DMSO-d6) 164.51, 155.09, 154.65, 147.03, 110.88, 24.54, 16.52; m/z (EI, 70 eV): 148 (M+, 20), 109 (100), 80 (8). Anal. Calcd. for C7H8N4 (148.17): C, 56.74;H, 5.44; N, 37.81%. Found: C, 56.58; H, 5.51; N, 37.93 %.
