Trolamine Chemical Properties,Uses,Production
Description
Trolamine, also known as triethanolamine (TEA), is categorized as a tertiary amine and a triol. This compound displays dual characteristics, combining the properties of alcohols and amines. Trolamine comprises minor quantities of diethanolamine and ethanolamine. Additionally, it serves as an antioxidant, offering protection against the auto-oxidation of animal and vegetable fats. In various industrial and cosmetic applications, trolamine serves as a pH adjuster and surfactant, commonly found in skincare and haircare products for conditioning purposes.
Mechanism of action
Trolamine, being an amine compound, has the ability to accept a hydrogen ion, leading to the formation of hydroxide ions and a conjugate acid. This process results in an increase in the pH level of the solution. Moreover, trolamine acts as a surfactant, effectively reducing the interfacial tension within a mixture or solution. This property helps to prevent the separation of emulsions or the precipitation of compounds from the solution.
Pharmacology
Acts as a surfactant or alkalizing agent to aid in emulsification and solubilizing of compounds or in raising the pH of a solution.
