Ursodeoxycholic Chemical Properties,Uses,Production

Description

Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), also known as ursodiol, is a naturally-occurring bile acid that constitutes a minor fraction of the human bile acid pool. It is a medication used in the management and treatment of cholestatic liver disease.

Uses

Ursodeoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring hydrophilic bile acid which has been demonstrated to decrease cholestasis. Ursodiol has been postulated to reduce the hydrophobic bile acids in the hepatobiliary system to lessen the potential for hepatotoxicity. It has been extensively evaluated in prophylaxis of SOS, with modest benefits. Ursodiol has also been postulated to exhibit immunomodulatory and antiapoptotic properties and may be used as an adjunctive therapy for patients with acute or chronic GVHD of the liver.
