순도시험
(1) 융점 : 이 품목의 융점은 57~65℃이어야 한다.
(2) 용상 : 이 품목 0.5g을 에탄올 10mL에 녹일 때 이 액은 무색 징명하여야 한다.
(3) 황산염 : 이 품목 0.5g을 아세톤 35mL에 녹이고 묽은염산 1mL 및 물을 가하여 50mL로 하여 시험용액으로 한다. 따로 0.01N 황산 0.2mL에 아세톤 35mL, 묽은염산 1mL 및 물을 가하여 50mL로 하여 대조액으로 한다. 양 액에 염화바륨시액 2mL씩 가하여 잘 섞고 10분간 방치할 때, 시험용액의 탁도는 대조액의 탁도 이하이어야 한다.
(4) 비소 : 이 품목을 비소시험법에 따라 시험할 때, 그 양은 4.0ppm 이하이어야 한다.
(5) 납 : 이 품목 5.0g을 취하여 원자흡광광도법 또는 유도결합플라즈마발광광도법에 따라 시험할 때, 그 양은 2.0ppm 이하이어야 한다.
(6) 수은 : 이 품목을 수은시험법에 따라 시험할 때, 그 양은 1.0ppm 이하이어야 한다.
(7) 파라히드록시아니솔 : 이 품목 1g에 에테르․석유벤진의 혼액(1 : 1) 20mL를 가하여 녹인다. 이에 물 10mL 및 수산화나트륨시액 1mL를 가하고 잘 흔들어 섞은 다음 정치하여 하층을 취한다. 이 액에 에테르․석유벤진의 혼액(1 : 1) 20mL를 가하여 잘 흔들어 섞은 후 정치하여 하층을 취해서 물을 가하여 500mL로 한다. 이 액 1mL를 네슬러관에 취해 수산화나트륨시액 2mL, 붕산용액(3→100) 5mL 및 물을 가하여 30mL로 한다. 이에 4-아미노안티피린용액(1→1,000) 5mL를 가하여 흔들어 섞은 다음 페리시안화칼륨용액(1→100) 1mL를 가해 흔들어 섞고 다시 물을 가하여 50mL로 하여 15분간 방치 할 때, 그 액의 색은 염화제일코발트비색표준원액 0.6mL에 물을 가해 50mL로 한 액의 색보다 진하여서는 아니 된다.
확인시험
(1) 이 품목의 에탄올용액(1→100) 2~3mL에 붕사용액(1→50) 2~3방울 및 2, 6-디클로로퀴논클로로이미드의 작은 결정을 가하여 흔들어 섞으면 액은 청남색을 나타낸다.
(2) 「디부틸히드록시톨루엔」의 확인시험 (2)에 따라 시험한다.
강열잔류물
이 품목의 강열잔류물은 0.05% 이하이어야 한다.

Butylated hydroxyanisole is an antioxidant with some antimicrobial properties. It is used in a wide range of cosmetics, foods, and pharmaceuticals. When used in foods, it is used to delay or prevent oxidative rancidity of fats and oils and to prevent loss of activity of oil-soluble vitamins.Butylated hydroxyanisole is frequently used in combination with other antioxidants, particularly butylated hydroxytoluene and alkyl gallates, and with sequestrants or synergists such as citric acid.
FDA regulations direct that the total content of antioxidant in vegetable oils and direct food additives shall not exceed 0.02% w/w (200 ppm) of fat or oil content or essential (volatile) oil content of food.
USDA regulations require that the total content of antioxidant shall not exceed 0.01% w/w (100 ppm) of any one antioxidant or 0.02% w/w combined total of any antioxidant combination in animal fats.
Japanese regulations allow up to 1 g/kg in animal fats.

Butylated hydroxyanisole is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and is metabolized and excreted in the urine with less than 1% unchanged within 24 hours of ingestion. Although there have been some isolated reports of adverse skin reactions to butylated hydroxyanisole, it is generally regarded as nonirritant and nonsensitizing at the levels employed as an antioxidant.Concern over the use of butylated hydroxyanisole has occurred following long-term animal feeding studies. Although previous studies in rats and mice fed butylated hydroxyanisole at several hundred times the US-permitted level in the human diet showed no adverse effects, a study in which rats, hamsters, and mice were fed butylated hydroxyanisole at 1–2% of the diet produced benign and malignant tumors of the forestomach, but in no other sites. However, humans do not have any region of the stomach comparable to the rodent forestomach and studies in animals that also do not have a comparable organ (dogs, monkeys, and guinea pigs) showed no adverse effects. Thus, the weight of evidence does not support any relevance to the human diet where butylated hydroxyanisole is ingested at much lower levels. The WHO acceptable daily intake of butylated hydroxyanisole has been set at 500 μg/kg body-weight.
